How to Install a Tomei Titanium Test Pipe on the S14 240SX

Introduction

The Tomei Test Pipe is constructed from titanium and is a great addition to the Tomei Titanium Exhaust. Comparing the stock weight of the factory catalytic converter which is 7.82 lbs (5.90 for the S14 Dummy Cat), this Tomei Test Pipe, figuratively speaking, is a feather weighing in at 1.75 lbs.

The stock Dummy Catalytic converter came in weighing 5.9 pounds. It is refered to as a "Dummy Cat" because although it has the shape of a Catalytic converter it actually doesn't have any catalyzing elements inside.

The biggest benefit of our new Tomei Pipe is the fact that it is a full 3 inches in diameter, as oppose to 2.5 inches, and that it weighs a measly 1.75 pounds as shown in the image.

Step 2

Your first order of business is to remove the bolts that hold the down pipe to the exhaust. We used a 14 mm box end wrench for that.

Due to corrosion and the lack of anti-seize, the back bolts can get stuck when you try to remove them, so with the assistance of a friend use an impact gun (or better leverage) to remove the rear bolts while your friend holds it in place.

Here we had the stock (test pipe/ dummy cat) in the middle before we removed it. To the left is the piping that leads to a Rein Hard exhaust and to the right is the the old, oem down pipe.
Your first order of business is to remove the bolts that hold the down pipe to the exhaust. We used a 14 mm box end wrench for that.

After the "Dummy Cat" is removed hold the new Tomei Ti Test Pipe up to the section where it needs to go. As you can see the fitment is spot on. It should simply fit perfectly.

The next step in the installation is easy, before bolting anything up prep for the install. Apply the Tomei Bolt Smooth Paste so that the bolts do not seize or get stuck in the future.

Slide the bolt through the holes and screw on the nuts to tighten the test pipe to the other parts of the exhaust.

After the "Dummy Cat" is removed hold the new Tomei Ti Test Pipe up to the section where it needs to go. As you can see the fitment is spot on. It should simply fit perfectly.
The next step in the installation is easy, before bolting anything up prep for the install. Apply the Tomei Bolt Smooth Paste so that the bolts do not seize or get stuck in the future.

Do not fully tighten right now however. You might need to keep things loose to fully align all the components.

Once you have made sure everything is aligned properly, proceed to the final tightening.

Using a 14 mm socket and 14 mm box end wrench start tightening the Tomei Ti Test Pipe Down.

Use the wrench to hold down the nut while you use the socket to lock down the bolt.

Here you can see the perfect fitment once bolted up and notice the difference in size from the stock down pipe to the test pipe. The pipe being straight and not a empty chamber will increase flow and help improve the engine’s sound to boot.

This is how everything looked once it was all bolted up. We could not be any happier with the Tomei Titanium Test pipe at the end of the day.
